Scope and Contents The visit, which covered the 10-11 August, corresponds in many respects to that paid by Henry Brougham, John Joseph Henry, and Charles Stuart about that time. The account may, therefore, have been written by one of that party, though not by Brougham himself, who landed on the island later than the writer - see folios 4, 91, and “Brougham's life and times” (Edinburgh, 1871), volume i, page 100. Scope and Contents

Warren Hastings Anderson entered the merchant house of his uncle, Robert Anderson and Company, St. Andrew's Square, Edinburgh, in 1813, becoming a partner in 1818. From then until the 1850s he spent most of his life in Italy and France engaged in trade, finally retiring to Bowerhouse near Dunbar. Family, personal and legal material predominates in this collection.

David Ewen’s journal (folio 26) takes the form of occasional notes from October 1840 to March 1841, and describes the agriculture, countryside and climate of Madeira. It also mentions the wine trade, smuggling and the difficulties faced by invalids.

John Walker, from Kilmarnock, had previous experience on the Congo. The journal covers his voyage from Southampton to Cape Town, where he met H.M. Stanley, thence to the Congo, and the steamship operations to convey the expedition into the interior.

The volumes contain carbon copies of diary-letters to a friend in Edinburgh, of which folios 51-65 are duplicated in MS.9759 by the retention of the originals. The journal contains a description of the sea voyage and the social life of his tour, but is notable for its detailed descriptions of visits to printing houses, particularly Donnelley's of Chicago (MS.9759, folios 51-65) and the Government Printing Office, Washington (MS.9760, folios 1-29).
